Reality is based on the individual perpective influenced by their context. Les Précieuses are an example of this reality based on point of view.
Context-
1. When it is written
2. When it is set
3. Where it is set
Different Cultural Values:
Cyrano De Bergerac
- Loyalty to country
- Social class - different levels of masking
- People impact on reality
Northern Lights
- Loyalty to personal beliefs - people
- Social class - different needs characterise the different levels
- Reality impacts people
Understanding - fear of unknows - in Cyrano the people understand their reality which enables them to shape it around themselves, whereas in the Northern Lights the fear of the unknown and uncertainty of their world influences their actions and their attitude towards their reality.
Les Précieuses
1. 'Good' shown as 'Bad' - 1.1 can be 'more than they really are'
2. 'Bad' shown as 'Good' - 2.1can be 'less than they really are' - They value appearance over reality
from the perspective of the reader
Cyrano:
~ De Guiche: Hides his Gasconian background in favour of his rank and prestiege. no.1
~ Christopher: He gains the appearance of someone intelligent, and although he has loyal and brave qualities, he hides under the appearance of what he is not. no.1.1
~ Roxanne: Is seen as a precious one, but underneath that she is intelligent. no.1
~ Cyrano: first presented as less than he really is
Northern Lights:
~ Lyra: The change in context Lyra goe through when she leaves Jordan enables the change in her personality - this change in perspective leads to the change in her reaity.
~ Lord Asriel: Seen as a renound explorer whom Lyra idolises, however as the story progresses Lyra is able to see past the fascade and realises that the appearance is not the reality
~ Madame Coulter: Seen as an elegent, poised an eloquent. However in reality she is ruthless and that aspect of her, shows her ugly soul
~ Ma Costa: Appears a harsh and strict gypsy who is fundamentally simple, the reality is she is concerned and dedicated 'mother', who is willing to sacrafice almost anything for her friends and family. Link to revolution.
The change in context enables Lyra's gaining of knowledge, the gaining of knowledge leads to her changing impressions of the people around her.
